Surf Tours

In San Juan del Sur we have a lot of good breaks where we can take you to go surfing. Some are really close and accessible by car/truck. Others are more convenient to reach by boat. We also offer multi-day tours to other areas. We have surf tours appropriate for all budgets and levels of surfing.

Day Tours by Car

Remanso Beach is a mellow break close to San Juan del Sur that works well on a south swell. It’s good for longboarding, not so much because of the size of the wave but the way it breaks. It’s where we usually do lessons, but when there is swell it can really go off (the home page photo is from Remanso). Cost is $5 per person, $15 minimum.

Playa Maderas is Nicaragua’s most popular break for a reason. It’s a beautiful place with consistently surfable rights and lefts. It can be pretty mellow or pretty hollow- usually you can find a bit of both. Check out any local surf website or magicseaweed.com for pictures. Cost is $5 per person, $15 minimum. Overnight camping with us is also possible and may include additional fees.

Playa Yankee is a bit further removed from San Juan del Sur and not quite as consistent, therefore typically less crowded. When it’s working it’s a lot of fun. The classic Yankee wave is a big, heavy peak followed by a long, steep section going left. Cost is $10 per person, $30 minimum. Overnight camping with us is an option and may include additional fees.

Day Tours by Boat

There is nothing like surfing in front of a virgen beach with no one else around. Then relax and drink Nicaraguan rum, eat fresh fruit, and smoke a Nicaraguan puro on our spacious, covered boat. We do it best, picking you up straight from the beach in San Juan, one block from the shop without wasting time dicking around at the port.

Playa Hermosa, Tamarindo, and Yankee beaches are close to San Juan del Sur, and we can go to any of these breaks and surf for as long as you want (usually a 4 - 6 hour trip). Hermosa is an expansive virgin coast whose breaks hold up great in big swell, and on a small swell are great for beginners or classic-style longboarding. Cost is $120 for a group. Group size casually limited to eight.

Colorado, Panga Drops, and Manzanillo are further away to the north of San Juan del Sur. This trip can be up to a full day. Colorado is a hollow beach break in front of a river mouth with great barrels. Panga Drops, on the same beach, holds much slower waves, but they can break deep and get truly monstrous on a decent swell. Manzanillo (Punta Reloj) is a world class point break that gets big, barrels, and goes on forever. Cost is $180 for a group. There may be the possibility to join a group for $35 per person. Group size strictly limited to eight.

Tola (Popoyo, Santana, etc.)

Three days (two nights)

This is my favorite tour because we go to really cool places with great waves. This is great if you want to see the countryside, relax, and surf a lot. We can usually acommodate all levels of surfers because we are mobile and there are many good breaks around. Popoyo is a set of reefs, with a fast, hardcore outer reef and a slow point break on the inside. There is a beachbreak nearby too. Santana is fun, punchy, tubular wave. And there are others that I don’t like to mention here but we can go there too. Surfing is just part of it. We can take you to the hot springs, to the fish market in Astillero or to the country disco if it is Saturday. Cost is $30 per person, $90 minimum, not including hotel or meals. Acommodations are cheap though and camping is an option.
For extra $25 (group) plus park fees we can visit the nature reserve at Chacocente and surf or see seaturtle nesting (seasonal).
For extra $120 (group) we can take a boat out of Astillero to surf breaks further north.
